Helen D. Hansen

HELEN D. HANSEN was born January 31, 1915, in rural Oakland, Nebraska, to Ed O. and Anna (Westphal) Peterson. She passed away Monday, September 16, 2013, at Oakland Heights in Oakland.
Helen attended School District #40 in rural Burt County and graduated from Oakland High School in 1932.
She was confirmed in Salem Covenant Church, where she was a life-long member and member of Covenant Women. She was involved in Salem Sunday School and Vacation Bible School until the age of 85 years. In the 50’s, Helen was the Craft Director at Covenant Cedars Bible Camp. She was actively involved in the Oakland community through clubs and volunteer work.
On February 18, 1937, Helen married Harold Hansen at the bride’s home. They lived on Harold’s home place until October 1988. Helen loved her farm life—raising chickens, gardening, cooking for hay crews and using her band saw to make crafts, especially decorative bird houses. After Harold passed away, Helen moved into her home in Oakland. In 2005, she moved to Oakland Heights Assisted Living and in February of this year, moved to Oakland Heights Nursing Home. Her strong faith, positive attitude, work ethic, sharing with others and sense of humor has left a meaningful legacy for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold; grandson, Michael Hansen; sisters, Edna Sandberg and Amy Brown; brother, Roy Peterson.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Nona and Ron Helsing of Lincoln, NE; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Bobbie Hansen of Shawnee, KS; four grandchildren and their spouses, Steve (Karen) Helsing of Atlanta, GA, Patty (Brad) Eaton of Omaha, NE, Lori (Scott) Collingwood, of Layton, UT, David (Dawn) Hansen of Lenexa, KS; eleven great grandchildren, Ryan, Connor, Daniel, Kyle and Lauren Helsing, Kaitlyn and Josh Radl and Braden Collingwood, Austin and Alex Hansen, Matthew and Bethany Eaton.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: Friday, September 20, 2013, 11:00 a.m. at Salem Covenant Church in rural Oakland, Nebraska.
VISITATION: Thursday, September 19, 2013, 6 - 8 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Home in Oakland.
BURIAL: Friday, 10:30 a.m. at Salem Cemetery in rural Oakland.
